Electric vs Manual Toothbrushing

Many patients ask us which is the best way to clean your teeth. Research, and our individual experience, suggests that an Oral B electric toothbrush is more effective at removing plaque than manual cleaning.

The Oral B Electric toothbrushes have a small round head, which oscillates back and forth, sweeping the plaque away from the gums. This allows you to clean your teeth more efficiently, but causes less wear to the teeth and gums, reducing the risk of gum recession in patients who are prone to this.

We often see a noticeable increase in gum health, once our patients switch to using an Electric tooth brush.

A variety of heads are available for the Braun Oral B tooth brushes, but we recommend the standard small round head (precision clean). The bigger heads do not seem to clean as well.

We also suggest that you invest in the better models, (e.g. 1000, 3000,5000 series), as the head pulsates in and out very slightly, in addition to the back and forth movement, giving a deeper, 3D clean. They also have better motors, longer lasting batteries, and battery level indicators.

The best way to brush using an Electric toothbrush, is to hold the bristles on the gum margin, start at the back, and slowly move along the gum line, all the way to the other side, letting the brush do the work. If your gums do bleed anywhere, there is no need to worry, as it is just a sign that you have not been cleaning that area as well, and have been leaving plaque behind.

In our opinion not enough research shows that sonic toothbrushes are as effective as the oscillating electric toothbrushes. However, we are all individuals and if you are more comfortable with a manual or a sonic toothbrush, are cleaning well, and have healthy gums, do not change.

We stock some of the Oral B models, and our prices are often cheaper than Boots, Argos and Tesco.

Jo is Back!

Our Dentist Joanna Stafford starts back in June, after having been off for a short period on maternity leave. Joanna had a baby boy Teddy.

Joanna has been with the practice for just over 5 years, and has built up a following of patients whom she has helped over the years.

For those patients who have been waiting for Joanna to get back to work, we are now booking up her appointments. Please phone the practice, and make a suitable appointment.

New Saturday Morning Appointments

Saturday morning appointments have always been very popular and get filled quickly. Due to our limitations, we currently only open on 1 Saturday morning per month, 9 am till 1 pm.

However, from June, we will be open 2 Saturday mornings per month i.e alternate Saturday mornings. This should provide better access for our patients who prefer the Saturday appointments.

At your check up the dentist will check how well you are brushing
your teeth. They will also be checking how much plaque is in your mouth…

What exactly is Plaque?

Plaque is a sticky film of germs (bacteria) that grows on the teeth and gums. These bacteria react with sugars and starches in the foods we eat and drink to make acids and other substances that can cause problems and damage the teeth, gums, and bone. These problems include: tooth decay, bad breath and gum recession.

More surprising details on plaque: Dental plaque is a very smart, complex colony of different types of bacteria which live together, and assist each other. The nastier, bacteria live on the inside of the mix, and provide nutrients. While the hardier bacteria, live on the outside of the colony and provide protection from the saliva and adherence to the tooth surface.

To date, at least 500 different species of micro organisms have been identified within Dental plaque. Tooth surface is the only bacterial covered surface in the mouth which does not shed regularly, and so bacteria are allowed to mature, and get cosy, if not removed
thoroughly on a regular basis.

Layers of plaque build up , if brushing is not performed and if this continues to form it will eventually result in tartar that cannot be removed my brushing at home. These are the first stages of gum disease.

The main cause of tooth loss among adults in the UK is gum disease. This condition is extremely common; with one in four adults over the age of 35 in the UK suffering from it to some degree. Tooth loss is your body’s natural way of stopping the dental plaque from getting into the blood stream, and causing serious illness. The body slowly pushes out the tooth, which is covered in damaging bacteria, by resorbing the bone around it, with an end plan of the tooth dropping out.

Will a mouthwash do?

Careful brushing and cleaning in between your teeth is VERY important to prevent gum disease and tooth decay. This is because it’s the mechanical force of brushing and flossing that dislodges and removes the film of plaque that is harmful to our teeth and gums. Mouthwashes do not thoroughly remove plaque, and should not be seen as an easy way out. Mouthwashes are useful to freshen breath, or to deliver fluoride to the tooth surface, but when it comes to cleaning, they only remove a few layers of bacteria from the surface of the plaque build up.

Top Tip: make sure to brush the inside surfaces of your teeth( on the tongue side) at the gum line.

This is an area that is easy to miss!. Plaque tends on to build up along the gum line first so this is where you need to angle your toothbrush.

Why have a Hygiene visit?

Gum care is vital to keep hold of your teeth for life, keep your breath fresh and keep a healthy youthful smile. Neglecting your gums can cause many problems including tooth decay, sensitivity, pain and eventually, loose teeth.

The hygienist plays a key role in looking after your teeth:

Remove tartar that cannot be removed with a toothbrush

Ensure that your gums are healthy and pink, not inflamed and red

Give you important care advice to carry out an effective dental care routine every day at home.

Stop gums bleeding when brushing

Prevent teeth from becoming loose and drifting

Did you know?

Dental phobia affects 5.5million people in the UK, with around 1.4 million preferring to suffer from toothache
than visit the dentist

There are many reasons behind this fear, including fear of pain, needles, gagging and having things placed inside
your mouth. Some people may also feel very vulnerable in the dentist’s chair, or may be embarrassed by their teeth.

Often your fear can stem from an incident in your childhood.

Whatever the reason, there are a number of steps you can take to help you conquer your fear.

The first is to share your concerns with us. We understand that many people do have problems with visiting the dentist and are happy to do what we can to help. Always remember you are in control!
Some of the techniques we use at Whole Tooth are :

Good anaesthesia, so you can be confident that the procedure will be pain free

Distraction, to help take your mind off the procedure being carried out

Desensitising your memory of previous bad experiences, by starting with a nice easy treatment.

Tell. Show. Do – if you know what sensations you can expect to feel, then you are more relaxed.

Giving you the power to stop us anytime during the procedure.

Involving you in your dental care, so that there is less fear of the unknown.

Intravenous sedation for some treatments, so that you can have the procedure done while you dream!

For more help and advice, please feel free to speak to us. You can also find advice and support on www.beyondfear.org

Eating and drinking fresh fruits and juices is part of a healthy balanced diet. But have them too often, and they can cause damage to the tooth’s enamel. This is called acid erosion, and appears as a worn surface and thinning of the tooth. Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the human body, but is still vulnerable to acid.
Every time you eat or drink anything acidic, the enamel on your teeth becomes softer for a short while, and loses some of its mineral content. Your saliva will slowly cancel out this acidity in your mouth and get it back to its natural balance. However, if this acid attack happens too often, your mouth does not have a chance to repair itself and tiny particles of enamel can be brushed away. Over time, you start to lose the surface of your teeth. The acid can also open the dentine tubules, causing sensitivity.

Examples of acidic food : Oranges, Grapefruits, Apples, strawberries, berries, pineapple, and many other fruits

Examples of acidic drinks : Fresh fruit juice, Fruit Smoothies, fizzy drinks ( including Diet drinks) and fruit teas

Enamel starts to lose minerals at a ph below 5.5. But your saliva can help repair the damage , once the ph rises back to neutral ph

Orange juice has a ph of 3.6

Carbonated drinks have a ph of below 2.6

Milk has a ph of 6.6

Flouride can help the tooth enamel repair, and in addition, can make the enamel more resistant to future acid attack.

Tips to protect your teeth from acid erosion:

It’s all about frequency: so reduce how often you eat and drink acidic items, still have as much, but stick to
meals and snacks.

Avoid acidic snacks and acidic drinks between meals

Avoid swishing or holding acidic drinks in your mouth

Leave as long as possible before brushing teeth after eating

After an acidic meal, eat nuts or cheese to reduce acidity in your mouth

Chewing sugar free chewing gum after anything acidic, increases saliva flow, and will help the tooth surface recover
quicker.

Other preventative tips:

Toothpaste: use a fluoride toothpaste with low abrasion to help re-harden tooth enamel. If you are more prone to acid erosion of the teeth, then certain products help protect the tooth surface from the acid eg. Sensodyne Pronamel

Mouthwash: Use a fluoride-containing, alcohol-free mouthwash maybe once or twice a week.

Toothbrush: use a medium or soft brush that’s gentle on tooth enamel. definitely avoid a hard brush

For children aged up to 12 years – use a children’s flouride toothpaste for protection against acid erosion and tooth decay. Children’s tooth pastes still contain flouride, but a lower dose than adult tooth paste
